What to Know about Camping tents

from:

If you still picture camping tents as being made of canvas and requiring a good bit of pole setting and staking, then you’re in for a bit of a surprise when it comes to the camping tents that you can readily find today. From cocoon like miniature tents that are just big enough for your sleeping bag to large room sized tents that can fit the whole family, the kind of tent that you select is just like any other piece of camping equipment that you might purchase – it just depends on the kind of camping that you plan on doing.

First, start by considering where and when you plan on using your tent. Many tents are rated by the number of seasons that they are designed to withstand. For example, four season tents are those that are more durable, wind and cold resistant so that they can be used in severe winter conditions. Other camping tents may be rated as three seasons, meaning that they are not best for use in severe cold. Read the information provided by the manufacturer in the product description to determine what weather conditions it is best for.

Beyond the weather conditions, you’ll find a wide variety in the sizes and types of features that are available. If you are a single traveller or are camping with someone that you don’t mind sharing intimate quarters with and you want to carry as light a load as possible, then consider the bivouac type of camping tents. These are simple, cocoon type shelters that basically provide an extra layer of protection by creating a sheath that is a few inches away from the sleeping bag all around you.

For those who would prefer a bit more elbow room, more traditional tents start at a size meant for one person an can continue up to a kind of room sized tent that is large enough for a family – or more. For the smaller to medium camping tents, many of them are ‘pop-up,’ or in other words, they unfold to their assembled shape, making them easy to set up. Of course, the larger the tent that you select, the more assembly that will be required by you.

Beyond size, you’ll find numerous features regarding the tent itself. From color to material to design, the variety is nearly endless. You can find a basic camping tents with no frills, or you can get ones that have ‘windows’ and ‘skylights’ and even ‘rooms’ within the tent. Of course, with that variety comes a huge range of prices and weights as well – important things to remember when you are travelling alone or on a budget.
